Insider Tips

Book the First Slot and Climb Early: Sightseeing stops admitting around 4pm and the dome stairs get last calls from about 3.45pm, so a late slot means rushing. Book the earliest time and head for the Dome Galleries as soon as they open at 9.30am, while the spiral stairs are still clear.
Join the Free Tour Inside the Door: Volunteer guides in red sashes gather just past the entrance and run tours of up to two hours that reach spaces off the normal route, including the Geometric Staircase. Ask for the next start time before you pick up your multimedia guide.
Carry Water for the 528 Steps: There is no lift, the top sections are narrow and steep, and nothing is sold until you are back down. Fill a bottle before you enter and wear flat shoes.
Finish in the Crypt: The cafe, toilets, shop and exit are all on the lowest level. Save the tombs of Wren, Nelson and Wellington for last and leave without doubling back.

Sightseeing runs Monday to Saturday from 8.30am, with last entry usually at 4pm and sightseeing ending 30 minutes later. Hours vary on some dates, so check the calendar for your day.
The Dome Galleries open at 9.30am with last entry at 4.15pm, and are reached by stairs only: 257 steps to the Whispering Gallery, 376 to the Stone Gallery and 528 to the Golden Gallery.
Please note that entry to the Golden Gallery is subject to availability due to the capacity control policy of the church at the moment.
On Sunday, the cathedral is open for worship only.
A multimedia guide is included with admission, and free volunteer-led guided tours run during the day.

Do I need to book St Paul’s Cathedral tickets in advance, or can I just turn up?

Book ahead: your ticket is for a specific date and entry time, and sightseeing runs Monday to Saturday only, with last entry usually at 4pm. With a pre-booked ticket you go straight to the security queue on the front steps instead of the ticket desk. If your plans change, cancellation is free with 48 hours’ notice.
Is St Paul’s Cathedral free to enter?

Attending a service is free, but sightseeing is not: the Cathedral Floor, the Crypt, the Dome Galleries and the multimedia guide are open only to ticket holders, and during services the sightseeing areas are closed off. If you want to explore the building and climb the dome rather than sit through a service, you need a sightseeing ticket for a Monday to Saturday visit.
