  • Book a Weekday and Be There at Opening: Your ticket is valid only on the date you pick, so choose a Tuesday to Friday if you can. Be at the doors when they open; the floor is emptiest for the first hour.
  • Start at the Back: School groups arrive late morning and cluster in the first gallery by the entrance. Walk straight through to the far end and work back toward the front.
  • Bring a Partner: Plenty of exhibits need a second pair of hands or eyes to work at all. Pair up rather than splitting up.
  • Pack Snacks and a Bottle: The cafe line peaks at lunchtime and you can easily be inside five hours. Refill at the water fountains around the floor and eat when the exhibits are busiest.
  • Get a Hand Stamp Before You Step Out: Ask for a stamp on your way out and you can come back in the same day, so a lunch break on the Embarcadero costs you nothing extra.
  • Photography is allowed, but taking videos and photos for commercial purposes, as well as the live broadcasting of the show is strictly prohibited.
  • Comfortable shoes are highly recommended, as the museum covers 3.3 acres.
