Pace the climb: The 463 steps include narrow, steep, spiral sections with little airflow and can get hot, so wear cool clothing and take the stairs at a comfortable pace.
Health check: There is no elevator, so decide in advance whether the climb suits you if you have heart conditions, dizziness, or claustrophobia.
Check closures: The Baptistery mosaic vault is currently under restoration and hidden from view, and the Opera del Duomo Museum closes on the first Tuesday of each month, so time your visit if those are on your list.
