Highlights

  • Iconic Structure: Tokyo Tower is a striking red and white tower standing at 333.9 meters (1,092 feet). It was completed in 1958 and inspired by the Paris Eiffel Tower. It remains a symbol of Tokyo's skyline and is recognized worldwide.
  • Observation Decks: Tokyo Tower offers two observation decks that provide breathtaking city views. The Main Observatory is located at 150 meters (492 feet), while the Special Observatory is at 250 meters (820 feet). Enjoy panoramic views of Tokyo's skyline, including landmarks like Mt. Fuji, Tokyo Skytree, and the Tokyo Bay area.
  • Love Power Spot and Great Shinto Shrine: One unique feature of Tokyo Tower is its Love Power Spot on the Main Observation Deck. This spot is believed to enhance love and relationships. You can also explore the Great Shinto Shrine, which provides a serene and spiritual atmosphere amidst the bustling city.
  • Light Illumination: Tokyo Tower lights up in various colours during the night, creating a beautiful spectacle. The tower features seasonal illuminations and special light-ups for events or celebrations. The illuminated tower is a favourite spot for photographers and offers a romantic ambience.
  • Shops and Restaurants: The base of Tokyo Tower houses various shops and restaurants where you can indulge in shopping, dining, and entertainment. The Foot Town complex includes souvenir shops, cafes, a wax museum, and an aquarium. It's a great place to explore and take a break after enjoying the vista from the 360 degrees observation decks.
  • Special Events: Tokyo Tower hosts various events throughout the year. These include light shows, exhibitions, art installations, and seasonal celebrations. Some notable events include the New Year countdown, cherry blossom illuminations, and Christmas-themed displays.

Insider Tips

  • Keep the Ticket Screen Open: The counter queue is for people buying on the day. With your e-ticket open on your phone, walk past it to the elevator line, where staff check the screen. The same screen gets you onto the stairs.
  • Arrive an Hour Before Sunset: The Main Deck has no time limit, so go up in daylight and stay while the city lights come on. Weekend evenings are the crush; pick a weekday if you can.
  • Go Down One Floor: The Main Deck is two levels. The Skywalk Window glass floor, the cafe and the shrine are on the lower level, reached by the stairs beside the shop, and it is easy to leave without seeing it.
  • Walk Down the Outside Stairs: The elevator queue down can be as long as the one up. When the open-air staircase is open, take the roughly 600 steps down through the steel frame instead.

FAQs

  • Do you need to book Tokyo Tower in advance?

Not strictly, but booking online means you skip the ticket counter and go straight to the elevator line with the e-ticket on your phone. This Main Deck ticket is an open-date ticket with no time slot, so you choose the day and the hour once you arrive. The counter queue is longest on weekend evenings around sunset.

  • Does this ticket include the Top Deck?

No. This ticket covers the Main Deck at 150 metres, which has two levels including the Skywalk Window glass floor. The Top Deck at 250 metres is a separate, reservation-only guided tour with fixed 15-minute departure times that the tower sells on site and online, and late arrivals are not admitted to it.

  • What is the best time to visit Tokyo Tower?

Late afternoon into dusk. The tower stays open into the late evening and there is no time limit on the Main Deck, so you can go up in daylight, watch the sunset and stay for the night view on one ticket. Mount Fuji is only visible on a clear day, so a daytime slot is the better bet for that; last admission can be brought forward on busy days.

  • Is it worth going into Tokyo Tower?

Yes if you want a 360-degree view from the middle of the skyline rather than from its edge. The Main Deck at 150 metres puts you level with the surrounding towers, has glass floor panels looking straight down and, on clear days, a view to Mount Fuji. The open-air outdoor staircase, roughly 600 steps down through the steel frame, is something no other Tokyo observation deck offers.
