Insider Tips

  • Come by Tram, Not by Car: Tram route 58 and Royal Park station stop at the gate. The council car park is pay and display, fills by mid-morning on weekends and school holidays, and lapsed tickets are fined.
  • Be at the Gate for 9 AM: The big cats, gorillas and snow leopards are most active early and often out of sight by early afternoon, so head for them first and leave the reptiles and butterflies for later.
  • Plan Around the Keeper Talks: Talk times are printed on the paper map at the entrance, and signposting between precincts is thin. Take a map, photograph the big board by the gate, and route from talk to talk.
  • There Are No Elephants: The herd moved to Werribee Open Range Zoo and the old precinct is empty. Spend that time in the Butterfly House, the walk-through lemur habitat and the Dinosaur Trail.
  • Bring a Picnic: Picnics are welcome and there are lawns throughout. Food outlets are few and queue at lunchtime.

Rules:

  • No feeding or touching the animals unless in designated areas.
  • Picnics and your own food and drinks are welcome, and cafes are also available on-site. If you leave the grounds, tell the gate staff first, as a scanned ticket cannot be reused for re-entry.
  • Smoking is only permitted in designated areas.
  • Supervise children at all times.
  • Respect all signs and barriers for your safety and the animals’.
  • Pets are not allowed inside the zoo.

FAQs

  • Do I need to book Melbourne Zoo tickets in advance?

Yes. The zoo asks all non-members to pre-book online, and this ticket is for the date you choose, so you scan it at the gate and walk in without visiting the ticket window. You can reschedule or cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before your visit, as set out in the cancellation policy above.

  • Is it cheaper to buy Melbourne Zoo tickets online?

Yes. The price shown above is below the zoo’s own standard adult admission, and it includes the daily keeper talks and presentations. Animal encounters and experiences are sold separately at the zoo and are not part of this ticket.

  • Are children free at Melbourne Zoo?

Often, yes. The zoo admits children aged 0 to 3 free every day, and children aged 4 to 15 free on weekends, Victorian public holidays and Victorian school holidays when accompanied by someone aged 16 or over. This ticket is a single per-person admission rate, so on those days book it for the adults in your group only.
