Book a Weekday and Be There at Opening: Your ticket is valid only on the date you pick, so choose a Tuesday to Friday if you can. Be at the doors when they open; the floor is emptiest for the first hour.
Start at the Back: School groups arrive late morning and cluster in the first gallery by the entrance. Walk straight through to the far end and work back toward the front.
Bring a Partner: Plenty of exhibits need a second pair of hands or eyes to work at all. Pair up rather than splitting up.
Pack Snacks and a Bottle: The cafe line peaks at lunchtime and you can easily be inside five hours. Refill at the water fountains around the floor and eat when the exhibits are busiest.
Get a Hand Stamp Before You Step Out: Ask for a stamp on your way out and you can come back in the same day, so a lunch break on the Embarcadero costs you nothing extra.

Photography is allowed, but taking videos and photos for commercial purposes, as well as the live broadcasting of the show is strictly prohibited.
Comfortable shoes are highly recommended, as the museum covers 3.3 acres.

Is my Exploratorium ticket valid for a specific date, and can I cancel it?

Yes. Exploratorium tickets are valid only on the date you select and are nontransferable, so pick your visiting day carefully at checkout. This booking comes with free cancellation as long as you give at least 24 hours’ notice.
Can you buy Exploratorium tickets at the door?

Walk-up tickets are sold at the ticketing desk on the day, but every ticket is tied to that date and weekends, holidays and school breaks are the busiest times. Booking online in advance lets you lock in your day before it fills up and arrive with the voucher ready on your phone.
Are kids free at the Exploratorium, and what age is it good for?

Children aged 3 and under enter free, while ages 4 to 17 pay the youth rate. Nearly every exhibit is hands-on, so the museum works best once a child can read the instructions at each station, roughly school age and up, but toddlers still enjoy the water, bubble and light exhibits.
How long does it take to go through the Exploratorium?

Plan for at least half a day. There are hundreds of interactive exhibits spread across the pier, and most people run out of time before they run out of things to try. If you leave for lunch, get your hand stamped so you can come back in the same day.
Is the Exploratorium fun for adults?

Yes. The exhibits are built around real scientific phenomena rather than play equipment, and adults without children are a normal sight on the floor. Note that a standard daytime ticket covers daytime hours only; the Thursday evening After Dark sessions are 18+ and separately ticketed.
