Highlights

  • USS Intrepid (CV-11): The museum is housed on the historic USS Intrepid, an Essex-class aircraft carrier that served in World War II and the Vietnam War. Visitors can explore the flight deck, hangar deck, and various aircraft on display.
  • Space Shuttle Enterprise: One of the main attractions is the Space Shuttle Enterprise, the prototype orbiter that paved the way for the Space Shuttle program. It's displayed on the flight deck, allowing visitors to get up close to this iconic spacecraft.
  • Aircraft Collection: The museum features an extensive collection of military aircraft, including fighter jets, reconnaissance planes, and helicopters. Notable examples include the A-12 Blackbird, F-14 Tomcat, and the British Airways Concorde.
  • Submarine Growler: Explore the USS Growler, a guided missile submarine that played a crucial role during the Cold War. Visitors can experience life aboard a submarine and learn about its strategic importance.
  • Interactive Exhibits: The museum offers a range of interactive exhibits and simulations that engage visitors of all ages. These include flight simulators, virtual reality experiences, and hands-on activities that provide a deeper understanding of aviation and space exploration.

Insider Tips

  • Book a Morning Entry: Pick a mid-morning arrival and skip the final hour before closing, when the submarine queue eats the visit and staff start clearing the ship. Everyone passes an airport-style metal detector at the pier and there is no bag or coat check, so come without luggage.
  • Do Growler First: The submarine sits on the pier beside the carrier, admits small groups and its line grows all day and can close early. Walk through it before you board the ship, then take the rest at your own pace.
  • Flight Deck Before Noon: The deck has no shade and gets hot by midday, while the hangar deck below is air-conditioned. Go up first with sunscreen and a refillable bottle, then work your way down.
  • Ask the Veterans: Volunteers who served on these vessels stand at the bridge, hangar and submarine, and they know the day’s film and demonstration times. Ask one for the schedule before you set your route.

Entry & Services:

  • It takes approximately three hours to tour the entire museum.
  • Last entry is one hour before closing. The museum closes at 5pm Monday to Friday, and at 6pm on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from April to September. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
  • All bags pass through a security screening with a metal detector at the entrance. There is no bag or coat check, so bags, strollers and luggage must stay with you at all times.
  • Submarine Growler: everyone must be at least 40 inches tall and able to pass through a replica hatch unassisted. Strollers, backpacks, large bags, luggage, food and drinks are not permitted inside, and the line may close early.
  • The Concorde interior is open only on a separately ticketed guided tour sold by the museum; it is not part of general admission.
  • The museum has no visitor parking lot and does not validate parking. The nearest NYC Ferry stop is Midtown West at Pier 79 (W. 39th Street).

FAQs

  • Are Intrepid Museum tickets valid for a specific date?

Yes. This is a fixed-date ticket, valid only on the day you select at checkout, and it is shown on your phone as a mobile voucher, so nothing needs printing. Last entry is one hour before closing, and if plans change the booking can be cancelled or rescheduled free of charge with at least a day’s notice.

  • Is the Concorde included in Intrepid Museum admission?

No. General admission covers the aircraft carrier Intrepid, the Space Shuttle Pavilion with Enterprise, the submarine Growler and the temporary exhibitions. The British Airways Concorde on the pier can be seen from outside, but going inside is only possible on a separate guided tour sold by the museum with its own time slot.

  • Can you tour the submarine at the Intrepid Museum?

Yes. The Cold War submarine Growler is included with admission and is a self-guided walk-through in small groups. Everyone, including children, must be at least 40 inches tall and able to step through a replica hatch unassisted, and strollers, backpacks and large bags are not allowed inside. The line can close early on busy days.
