Insider Tips

Skip the Museum Garage: The attached garage charges $30 a day. Hermann Park has free 3-hour lots at the McGovern Centennial Gardens and by the Sam Houston statue, a 10-minute walk away. Arrive early, because they fill.
Your Ticket Covers the Permanent Halls Only: The Cockrell Butterfly Center, the planetarium, the giant screen theatre and the special exhibitions are each ticketed separately at the box office. Decide on extras before you queue.
Last Entry Is Half an Hour Before Closing: Closing is 5pm Monday to Thursday and 6pm Friday to Sunday, and doors shut to new arrivals 30 minutes earlier. Come in the morning and allow four hours.
Take the Lift to the Top and Work Down: Start on the fourth floor and walk down to finish among the dinosaurs and gem halls. Open the drawers in the Cabinet of Curiosities.
Weekday Mornings Are School Time: In term time field trips fill the halls until early afternoon. Come after 2pm on a weekday for a quieter visit.

What does a Houston Museum of Natural Science ticket include?

Admission to the permanent exhibit halls across all four floors, including the paleontology, gems and minerals, ancient Egypt and wildlife halls. The Cockrell Butterfly Center, the Burke Baker Planetarium, the Wortham Giant Screen Theatre and special exhibitions each need a separate ticket, sold at the museum.
Is the Houston Museum of Natural Science free on Tuesdays?

Only in the evening. The permanent exhibit halls are free from 5pm to 8pm on Tuesdays, first come first served, with tickets handed out at the box office from 5pm and no reservations taken. The butterfly center, planetarium, giant screen and special exhibitions are not included in the free hours, and a daytime ticket booked here is valid for the full opening hours.
Do I need to pick a date when I book?

Yes. The ticket is valid on the date you select, at any time during opening hours that day. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing, so plan a morning arrival if you want to see all four floors.
