Insider Tips

  • Walk Past the Ticket Office: With your e-ticket open on your phone, skip the ticket-office line in the underpass and head straight for the security check by the stairs. Security still runs 15 to 30 minutes at busy times, so arrive with that margin.
  • Expect Stairs Only: The lift is out of service until further notice, so the terrace means roughly 280 spiral steps with a break at the museum level halfway. Carry a bottle of water and take the climb in stages.
  • Beat the Sunset Cut-Off: The terrace stops admitting people once it is full, ticket or not. Check the exact sunset time and be in the security line at least 45 minutes before it.
  • Catch the Flame at 6:30pm: The eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is rekindled every evening at 6:30pm. Stand at the base for the ceremony, then expect the entrance to bunch up right after it.

Know Before You Go

  • Operating Hours - Opening hours may vary by season and public holidays. Check the official schedule before your visit.
  • Last Access - Last entry to the monument is 45 minutes before closing time.
  • Closure Dates - Closed on January 1, May 1, December 25, and during selected national ceremonies on May 8, July 14, and November 11.
  • Free Admission - Visitors under 18 years, eligible EU residents, guests with disabilities, and one accompanying companion may qualify for free admission. Free tickets are issued at the ticket office at the base on presentation of photo ID.
  • Getting to the Monument - The base of the arch is reached only through the pedestrian underpass (Passage du Souvenir) at the top of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. Crossing the roundabout on foot is prohibited.
  • Accessibility - The elevator is undergoing maintenance until further notice, so access to the terrace is currently by stairs only (about 280 steps). Check the monument’s notice on the day if you rely on step-free access.

FAQs

  • Do you need a ticket for the Arc de Triomphe?

Only if you want to go up. Walking under the arch, seeing the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the eternal flame is free once you reach the base through the underpass. The ticket covers the climb inside the monument, the exhibition level and the rooftop terrace with its 360-degree view.

  • Can you go up the Arc de Triomphe for free?

Yes, if you are under 18, or aged 18 to 25 and a national of a European Union country. Free tickets are not booked online: collect them at the ticket office at the base, and bring photo ID that shows your age and nationality. Everyone else needs a paid ticket.

  • Can you skip the line at the Arc de Triomphe?

A ticket bought in advance lets you walk past the ticket-office queue in the underpass and go straight to the entrance. There is still a security check at the door that everyone passes through, so allow some waiting time at busy periods and around sunset.

  • Are Arc de Triomphe tickets valid for a specific date or time?

Your ticket is a fixed-date ticket, so it is only valid on the date you select at checkout and cannot be used on another day. Last access to the monument is 45 minutes before closing time, so plan to be at the entrance before that, and earlier still if you want the sunset from the terrace.
