Be There for Your Start Time: Entry is by timed slot and late arrivals are not let in. Arrive 15 minutes early, because the entrance line and the cloakroom both queue even with a ticket in hand.
Come With a Small Bag: Backpacks go into the free cloakroom, which does not take suitcases or other luggage. Leave anything large at your hotel.
Download the App First: The free Rijksmuseum app gives you audio for the numbered works, so the paid audio tour is optional. Install it before you arrive and bring wired headphones.
Go Straight Up to the Gallery of Honour: Head to the second floor first for Vermeer and Rembrandt while it is quiet. The Night Watch hangs inside a glass chamber with restorers at work, so parts of the canvas look dull mid-treatment.
Find the Library: The Cuypers Library sits on level 2 beside the Gallery of Honour and is easy to walk past. Save the gardens outside for a break afterwards.

Do you need to buy tickets in advance for the Rijksmuseum?

Yes. Every ticket carries a date and a start time, and the museum asks everyone to book a slot before arriving. Morning slots fill first in high season, so book as early as you can.
What happens if I miss my start time?

The museum does not admit late arrivals, so be at the entrance a few minutes before your slot. Once inside there is no time limit and you can stay until closing time.
Is The Night Watch on display?

Yes. Rembrandt’s The Night Watch hangs in its own gallery inside a glass chamber where restorers are working on it in full view, so you see the painting with parts of the canvas looking dull as old varnish is removed.
