Insider Tips

  • Plan your visit: See the glacier palace, viewing platform and cinema lounge before you leave the summit, since re-entry is not allowed once you exit the mountain station.
  • Check the weather: Look at the Zermatt forecast before you go. The summit can close at short notice in high wind, and the view often clouds over by afternoon.
  • Go early: Take one of the first cable cars up for the clearest views and thinnest crowds; skiers fill the early cars and cloud tends to build later in the day.
  • Dress warm: Pack a jacket and layers even in summer, as temperatures at the top stay close to freezing, especially inside the ice grotto.
  • Bring coins: Keep some local cash or coins handy, as using the restroom at the summit station is not free.
