Insider Tips

Pack a Scarf and Long Trousers: Bare shoulders or knees get you turned back at security even with a booked ticket; the fallback is a disposable cover-up from the ticket office, then the queue again. Dress for the door before you leave the hotel.
Empty Your Bag of Glass: Perfume, jars, bottles and bike helmets do not get through the check, and there are no lockers at the gate. Leave shopping at the hotel or use a storage point in the square first.
Take the First Roof Slot: The terraces have no shade and no toilets, and by mid-afternoon there is a queue just to come down. Book the earliest slot and be at the north-side roof gate 15 minutes before it, voucher open.
Do the Roof Before the Nave: Even with a lift ticket you walk down a long staircase, and the one-way route ends inside the cathedral. Start up top and skip the ground-floor queue.

Not wheelchair accessible.
The entrance for people with disabilities is possible to the Hall from the Grande Museo del Duomo (closed on Wednesday).
Audio guides are available.
Restroom facilities are available inside and around the Duomo complex.
Due to adverse weather conditions, the visit path for the Rooftops may change.
A moderate amount of walking is involved. It is extremely recommended to wear comfortable shoes.
During hot days it is recommended to wear a sun hat.
The rooftop lift reaches the first terrace level only. The upper level and the descent are by stairs.
There are no toilets for visitors on the rooftops.
Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult on the rooftops.
Hats are not permitted inside the cathedral itself. Keep the sun hat for the terraces.
Glass and ceramic items, helmets and large bags are stopped at the security check and cannot be stored at the gate.

By Metro:

M1 (Red Line): The nearest metro station is Duomo station, which is directly located beneath the cathedral. It’s a convenient stop that takes you right to the heart of the square.
M3 (Yellow Line): The Duomo metro station also connects with the M3 line. Both the M1 and M3 lines pass through the same station, making it very accessible.

By Tram:

Tram 1: You can take tram 1, which stops at Piazza del Duomo, right in front of the cathedral.
Tram 2: Tram 2 also stops near the cathedral, a short walk from the entrance.

By Bus:

Several buses pass near the Duomo. The most direct routes are:
Bus 54 and Bus 60, which stop near Piazza del Duomo.

By Train:

If you're coming from Milano Centrale (the main train station), you can take the M1 (Red Line) metro toward Sesto 1 Maggio FS and get off at Duomo station.

FAQs

Is it free to enter the Duomo di Milano?

Only the prayer area is free, reached through a side door with no access to the nave, terraces or museum. Visiting the interior, climbing to the rooftops or entering the archaeological area needs a ticket, and every ticket sold here includes the cathedral interior.
Does the rooftop ticket include the cathedral interior?

Yes. Both rooftop options on this page (by stairs or by lift) cover the cathedral interior as well as the terraces, and the Church of San Gottardo except on Wednesdays. Terrace-only tickets sold at the door do not include the interior, so check what your ticket says before you queue.
What is the dress code, and what happens if I do not meet it?

Shoulders and knees must be covered, and hats, sleeveless or low-cut tops, shorts and miniskirts are refused at the security check even if you hold a valid ticket. Anyone turned away can buy a disposable cover-up at the ticket office and rejoin the queue, so a light scarf or long trousers saves both the money and the wait.
Is there a lift to the terraces, or do I have to climb?

Both are sold here as separate tickets. The lift, which holds seven people at a time, reaches only the first terrace level; the upper level and the whole way down are by stairs, so expect a long stone staircase at the end even on the lift ticket.
When is the best time to visit the Duomo di Milano?

The first entry of the morning, on a weekday if you can. The terraces have no shade, so summer afternoons are the hottest and busiest, and the queue to come back down builds after lunch. The Duomo Museum is closed on Wednesdays, so pick another day if your ticket includes it.
