Insider Tips

  • Book the Edges of the Day: Coaches roll in from about 8:30 and clear out after 4:30, and on extreme-heat days the site shuts from midday until 5pm with only a paper notice at the gate. In July and August book the first slot or one after 5pm so a closure cannot swallow your dated ticket.
  • Load the Audio Guide at Your Hotel: The guides waiting outside the ticket office push hard, and your audio guide is already paid for. Download it over Wi-Fi before you set out, then walk straight past them to the gate.
  • Fill Your Bottle Before the Gate: Nothing is sold once you are past the gate; the only kiosk and toilets are at the entrance. Carry a full bottle per person and use the toilets first.
  • Throne Room First: It is the only interior you can step into and its line passes 100 people by late morning. Go there straight from the gate, then loop the rest.

Rules:

  • Do not touch or climb on any ancient structures or ruins.
  • Re-entry is not allowed after you leave the venue.
  • This activity is not stroller and wheelchair-accessible.
  • Keep to marked paths and avoid restricted areas.
  • Photography is allowed, but no flash inside protected areas.
  • Food and drinks (except water) are not allowed inside the archaeological site.
  • Pets are not permitted, except for service animals.
  • Follow instructions from site staff and security guards.
  • Wear comfortable shoes — the terrain can be uneven and slippery.
  • Respect the historical site and other visitors by keeping noise to a minimum.

FAQs

  • Can I buy Knossos tickets at the gate?

Yes, the ticket office sells walk-up tickets, but in summer the queue regularly runs 30 to 45 minutes in full sun, and cruise-ship days are worse. A ticket booked here is a mobile voucher for a fixed date, so you bypass that line and enter directly.

  • What are the opening hours of Knossos Palace?

Knossos opens at 8:00 every day through the summer season and closes between 18:00 and 20:00 depending on the month; from 1 November it runs 8:30 to 17:00. Last admission is 15 minutes before closing, and the site is shut on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Easter Sunday and 25 to 26 December.

  • What is the best time to visit Knossos?

The quietest windows are the first hour after opening, before the coach groups arrive from about 8:30, and the late afternoon once they leave. Late slots also bring more shade, which matters because most of the route is open ground with little cover.

  • Is my Knossos ticket dated, and can I cancel it?

Your ticket is valid only for the date you select at checkout, so choose the day you will actually visit. You can cancel free of charge with at least 24 hours’ notice before that date.
