Pack a Light Rain Layer: This is an open-air museum and Ballarat weather can turn without much warning, even on a clear morning. Bring something waterproof so a passing shower does not cut your visit short.
Ask What Your Ticket Covers: General admission takes you through the outdoor town and museum. The underground mine tour, candle dipping, coach rides and the 1850s photography experience are booked and paid separately at the counter, so check before you plan your day around them.
Give Yourself Most of a Day: There is more here than a quick stop covers. Arrive when the gates open and plan to stay several hours to see the town properly.

Take a V/Line train from Melbourne's Southern Cross Station to Ballarat Station (approximately 90 minutes). Sovereign Hill is a short 5-minute taxi or bus ride from the station.

By Bus:

Public buses run from Ballarat Station to Sovereign Hill. Check local bus schedules for Route 21 or Route 24.

What are the opening hours?

Outside school and public holidays, Sovereign Hill is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm.
Does my ticket include the underground mine tour?

General admission covers the outdoor town, museum and Gold Museum. Guided underground mine tours, candle dipping, coach rides and the 1850s photography experience are separate, paid experiences booked on the day, so check availability at the ticket counter if you want to add one.
Can I take a photo with the costumed staff?

Yes. Staff throughout the town are dressed in costume from the 1850s and are happy to pose for a photo if you ask.
Is the cafe at Sovereign Hill open?

Yes. The on-site cafe, Prospectors Table, serves hot and cold meals and drinks.
Can I take my baby or toddler with me?

Yes. Children under 5 enter free and should still be included in your total group numbers when you book.
