Insider Tips

  • Use the Ticket Holders’ Line: Your ticket is for a fixed date and entry time, and ticket holders have their own line, separate from the walk-up queue at the box office. Be at the gate ten minutes before your slot with the ID for any reduced ticket.
  • Travel Light: Large backpacks go into the free lockers after the security check, and selfie sticks and tripods are not allowed in. Photos without flash are fine in most rooms.
  • Do Not Leave Without the Armoury: The Royal Armoury is in a separate building across the courtyard next to the exit and the palace ticket covers it. Once you pass the exit gate you cannot come back in, so see it before you go.
  • Go Before You Go In: There is no cafe on the route and toilets are few, with a queue for the women’s at the end. Use the facilities before security and carry a small bottle of water.

FAQs

  • Do you need tickets in advance for the Royal Palace of Madrid?

Yes. Every ticket is for a fixed date and entry time, and ticket holders use a separate line from the walk-up queue at the box office, which can run past an hour in high season. Book here, then arrive about ten minutes before your slot.

  • Is entry to the Royal Palace of Madrid free?

Only for citizens and residents of the EU and Latin America, with ID, from Monday to Thursday during the last two hours of opening, and only for self-guided visits. The free line forms more than an hour ahead, so a dated ticket is the faster way in for everyone else.

  • Are photography and videography allowed inside the palace?

Yes. Photographs without flash are allowed for personal use in most rooms, except where a sign says otherwise. Tripods and selfie sticks are not permitted inside.

  • Is there a dress code for the Royal Palace of Madrid?

No. The palace sets no dress code, but everyone passes through an airport-style security check, and large backpacks must go into the free lockers before the route.
